Pixen

Pixen is a simple drawing tool for Mac OS X with layer support

The Mac’s default image previewer supports some basic image editing features. However, there are no native Mac apps that allow you to extensively edit or even create an image with simple brush or shape tools, and so you’ll see plenty of apps claiming that spot. PaintBrush (read the review here) is one option for those who like something that is visually pleasing to use as well as feature-rich.

For those looking for layer support and want to work more with the image itself, there’s Pixen, a free Mac app that lets you draw in layers. It lets you create and edit layers on an image and has all the usual selection, shape, and drawing tools you find in regular graphics editors.

Pixen is a pixel image editor designed to work with low-resolution raster images, such as those 8-bit sprites found in old games.

With innovative features such as a color palette system, templates, and support for high scaling, Pixen combines all the tools pixel artists need into an intuitive Mac interface. Pixen also makes creating frame-by-frame animations fun and easy.

Pixen is only for drawing, and you can’t use it to add voice bubbles and funny text to family photos. It’s unique in that you can assign different left- and right-click tools and, in addition to the usual transparent backgrounds, it lets you define your own backgrounds. Dragging and dropping an image in Pixen only allows you to preview it, which means that the app can also act as a minimalist image viewer.

To open an image, use File>Open, the Tools window launches when you start the application. Open and Image in Pixen divides the application into three parts; the main section on the right is for viewing and editing the image, the upper left section shows what colors have been used in the image, and the panel below it is for managing layer opacity and adding new ones.

The tools window usually shows only items for the left mouse button, and you have to click on the Right tool to expand the right mouse button tool set. The tools remain the same, and the only thing this feature does is allow you to enable two of them at the same time and use them alternately with the two mouse buttons.

To change the background of the image, that is, the default background, click Background in the upper right corner and add a new background by dragging it to Alternate Background.

The app settings list the shortcuts that work in the app, and you can automatically select the color in the upper left corner.

Pixen is not exactly what you would call feature-rich, as it focuses more on creating images than on editing or retouching them. It is essentially something like the Paint app you find in Windows, although it does not contain a text tool, but it does support a sports layer.
